COBRA Cost Calculator

Estimate a possible monthly premium and see exactly which inputs and assumptions affect it. Takes about 60 seconds · No email required.

Enter your employer-plan contributions

Your COBRA premium can be higher than your payroll deduction because you may have to pay both the employee and employer shares plus an administration charge.

Enter a monthly amount. Convert weekly or per-paycheck deductions first.

Find this in your benefits statement, HR portal, or COBRA notice. Required for this estimate.

Contribution-based estimate

Your estimated monthly COBRA premium

This is an educational estimate, not a quote or eligibility decision.

How this result was calculated

Employee contribution: $0
Employer contribution supplied by you: $0
Administration factor used: 102%
Formula: (employee contribution + employer contribution) × administration factor
Benchmark dataset: Not used
Calculator methodology last updated: August 18, 2026
Verify the amount in your election notice. Federal COBRA generally permits a plan to charge up to 102% of the applicable total premium for standard continuation coverage. A plan may charge less, and other rules can apply. The election notice or plan administrator controls.

The estimate can differ because of outdated contribution data, the coverage tier or plan year, midyear changes, a different administration charge, partial-month coverage, or data-entry and payroll-frequency conversion errors.

Marketplace costs require a current plan search

This calculator does not display a Marketplace premium or personalized subsidy estimate. Marketplace prices and premium tax credits depend on current location-specific plans, ages, tax household, projected annual household income, access to other qualifying coverage, and other eligibility rules.

It also does not determine a Special Enrollment Period or confirm whether a doctor, hospital, or prescription is covered.

Methodology

When both monthly contributions are provided, the calculator adds them and applies the selected administration factor. It does not use a national benchmark when the employer contribution is missing; instead, it asks you to obtain that amount.

Formula: (employee monthly contribution + employer monthly contribution) × administration factor.

If 1.02 is selected, the output is a maximum-standard-fee estimate, not a statement that every plan charges 102%.
